One of the things we often see in buyers' cars is damaged wiper blades that need to be replaced.
Our trained technicians always check the wipers of vehicles arriving at the point of sale. They will assess the condition of the wipers: green, amber or red depending on its condition. It is recommended to replace the wiper blades every 6-12 months. The windshield wipers are made of rubber that degrades and becomes less effective over time. You should make a habit of checking your wipers regularly and knowing what signs to look for when they start to wear down. Daily use, wear and tear, UV rays, good and mild weather in Ireland, and even the type of washer fluid you mix with water can make your wiper blades deteriorate. They can become brittle, crack and even tear.
There are many signs that your wipers may need to be replaced. Your windshield wipers leave streaks on your windshield, skip spots, snap and of course, scary SCREAM!
Smudges: A visual inspection of the wiper blade shows that the rubber has hardened / cracked due to exposure over time. The sun's ultraviolet rays, tree sap and even road tar / road sand can cause damage. With each wipe, there will be streaks of water left and streaks will become more visible.
Smudging: the edge of the wiper is no longer sharp, but rounded due to wear and tear, causing water to smear on the screen, making it cloudy and less visibility.
Squeak: the old / worn blade rubber does not slide silently across the windshield.
Vibration: The blades bounce, vibrate against the windshield due to high and low temperatures over time or over an extended period of non-use.
One more thing to remember: Never use washing up liquid for the washer fluid tanks. Surfactants used for washing dishes, etc. they will destroy the rubber wiper blades and will have little effect on the paintwork as the salt affects the metal parts of the wiper arms. Always use an approved cleaning system additive.
