The most common causes of air conditioning failures

This function in your car is responsible for a smooth and comfortable driving. Although you can drive without it, we can only imagine sweating and discomfort in the cabin, especially on hot days. This is now a standard feature on all cars, in fact it is a must. Air conditioning is an escape from the prickly heat and humidity.

But not everything works as it should and all the time, right? Your car's air conditioning system is also prone to malfunctions.

There are tons of problems with the air conditioning system due to complex mechanics as well as electrical problems such as a damaged O-ring causing freon leakage, or a clogged expansion tube, or simply a defective compressor.

The main reasons for the breakdown of car air conditioning

Poor air flow

After you start your air conditioning, if you notice poor airflow from the blowers and no or low cooling, this is the most visible sign that your air conditioner needs repair.

Cause: it could be a lack of refrigerant, a clogged expansion tube or refrigerant charging hose, a damaged compressor, a damaged blower motor, a damaged condenser or evaporator, or a damaged fuse or circuit breaker. This symptom may require little maintenance or major repair, depending on the cause.

Loud noise when AC is turned on
Loud noises when turning on the AC are another potential symptom of AC failure.

Cause: Faulty AC compressor. Like other belt driven motor accessories, an AC compressor has several internal components and uses a sealed bearing to rotate. If any of the internal parts break or if the internal bearings of the compressor are damaged or seized, various types of noise can arise.

Bad smell in the cabin
This is probably one of the most disgusting things ever caused by a faulty air conditioning. When you get in the car and you smell a musty, pungent, moldy smell.

Cause: Your HVAC filter (heating, ventilation, air conditioning) or cab air filter might be dirty or worn. You need to clean it, or maybe a replacement is needed. Regular replacement of cabin filters will help prevent long-term damage to the air conditioning system and will also help reduce fuel consumption.

Unpleasant smells
it can also be caused by a moldy evaporator housing or a vent. This can put your health at risk as mold can cause an allergic reaction in some people. Regular cleaning of the evaporator housing and the air vent will help to solve this problem.

Water in the cabin
When you park your car after driving with the air conditioner on, you would notice a puddle of water under the car. This is normal and is in fact a sign of a perfectly healthy air conditioning system. But when you see water in the cabin, trouble starts.

Reason: the condensed water from the evaporator has to drain, but due to a clogged drain hose, it seeps into the booth. It is recommended to return the car to the workshop as soon as possible, because the water inside can cause significant damage to the vehicle's electrical system and even cause the risk of electric shock.

AC starts to cool down; then it suddenly gets warm
This is the most common complaint we have heard from a customer requesting an A / C repair. After you turn on the air conditioning, everything is fine for a few minutes, after which you begin to feel warm air from the vents.

Cause: This could be due to a clogged expansion valve blocking the flow of refrigerant to the evaporator. It can also damage the compressor clutch, which prevents the compressor from maintaining the correct pressure. It could also be a sign of a blown fuse or a leak.

Burning smell from AC
You will smell a pungent burning smell when you turn on the air conditioning.

Reason: There is a probability that the compressor lines are burnt or overheated. Damaged compressor wiring prevents the vehicle air conditioning system from operating properly. This will require a complete replacement of the wiring immediately to avoid electrical problems.

You turn on the AC and nothing happens
You press the AC button, the blower blows air but not cold air. Cause: Compressor clutch does not move. A clutch on the compressor allows the pulley to be turned on and off from the engine power, so that the compressor rotates only when necessary. The clutch can get jammed, causing the compressor to stay on constantly; or it may break, which means the compressor will not be able to receive engine power.
Compressor: the heart of your air conditioner
The AC compressor is one of the most important components of a vehicle air conditioning system. It is responsible for increasing the pressure in the air conditioning system and maintaining the flow of refrigerant so that it can function properly. Since it operates in a continuous on and off cycle, it is subject to wear every time AC is turned on. Like any other component on a vehicle, it will eventually fail and need to be replaced. The compressor is responsible for pressurizing and distributing the refrigerant. If there is any problem with the compressor it will affect the rest of the air conditioning system.

The air conditioning system is an essential component of your vehicle that makes driving more comfortable. Regular car service checks are essential to keep the air conditioning system in top condition and prevent long-term and more serious damage. It is best to maintain and thoroughly inspect the air conditioning system at least once a year. After all, prevention is better than cure.

The air conditioner in the vehicle consists of three parts. It has a compressor, condenser and evaporator. Each of these parts must be serviced and maintained regularly in order for the machine to run smoothly.
